Along the river, fragments accumulate: a swollen bra, a torn fishing net, twisting driftwood. They compose a small portrait of the Anthropocene, accumulating a new kind of silt, composing a new kind of continent. In making this work, I am asking what it means to find this complicated earth beautiful.
These pieces were developed along the Yangtze River in China, where the world's most massive infrastructure project has just been built (Three Gorges Dam). Millions of rural people have been relocated to the city, their homes flooded, pushing rapid high-rise development to house them. Each contour in these drawings was created using many observed details of natural and industrial accumulation along the river.
These pieces are early sketches in the process of development into sculpture.
